What is it?

They’ve all got two plugs per cylinder. For safety in the plane (a separate ignition system for each set of plugs), more power in the case of the others.

That’s an issue in the Smart, because you need to take off the rear bumper to access the lower set and it’s not uncommon either not to bother or not to know. Those thinking of the future cut a discreet hole under the number plate to provide easier access.

The 451s only have a single plug per cylinder...though the plugs are positioned in such a way that if you don’t have the hands of a woman, you’re going to get so cut up!

In early Smart engines all six spark plugs are the same, but please note that the engine in the 156 TS has candelle of two different sizes. The small one is there mostly to clean up emissions. The testa stretta twin-plug engines of the old 105 Giulia GTA (and its derivative in the  75 Twin Spark and 164 Twin Spark), on the other hand, are exactly the same size and they provide a noticeably higher level of performance.

I was lent one of the very first Smarts (a press pool car with rather fetching “cubic printing” paintwork) to take it back to base, +600 km away. My partner knew I was leaving the next day but had no idea what I would be driving. When she asked I mischievously answered “a German two-seater with a turbocharged, twin-plug engine, dear”.

Crushingly she replied “you are taking a Smart then??”

Damn.

Are they the iridium plugs that can go 50,000 miles or ordinary copper?

I think they’re the ordinary ones.

Well at least they should be cheap to replace.

Mazda rotaries have two plugs per chamber and can be swapped into any of the above vehicles.
